The critical
race theory continues to spark controversy in school districts across the
country. Multiple concerned parents like yourselves are continuing the fight
against the teaching of CRT in schools. Parents and community members alike are
taking to school boards to practice their constitutional right of free
speech in order to stop the promotion of racism caused by CRT. Many of
these parents are calling out the theory for creating division amongst races
and several parents are being intimidated by school board members for doing so.
The theory does not create a conducive learning environment for children and
hence CRT theory that goes by a different name in different schools, should not
have a place in the public education system paid for by the parents. Below are
some examples of parents and citizens who are fighting against CRT and the censorship
from board members.
The first
case is that of a black parent from Boston who starts her speech by immediately
letting school board members know that she is vehemently against the CRT. Just
like many other parents who have filed complaints about the theory, she
criticizes it and calls it divisive and that it demoralizes humanity especially
in her case where she has an interracial family. Her speech acknowledges the
division and confusion that CRT brings, especially to families like hers. Critical
Race Theory could potentially create a wedge between different races in
families like hers and this is unfair for a child who might get the idea that
they are not valued by one of their parents because of their racial identity.
In her speech, she highlights that as a black woman who went to school in the
1960s her mom did a good job of raising her to know that her future was
ultimately in her hands and that she could accomplish anything she wanted to.
In fact, she says that no white people held her back from achieving her goals
and that the most ridicule she got was from her black peers who called her out
on her physical appearance and bad grades to tear her down.
She continues
to make an example of how people don’t let go of the past and keep it prevalent
in their thinking today. Ultimately that’s what CRT is doing. She talks about
how her aunt questioned her choice to pursue veterinary studies as she saw it
as a white man’s job. It’s this mentality that people need to let go of.
The mentality that certain races are oppressed and others are oppressors and
even that certain races do not have the same opportunities as others is a thing
of the past but if you refuse to let go of the past what can one expect.
Students shouldn’t be divided or categorized by their race, they should be
taught to start businesses and motivated to pursue careers in any field they
want, she said as she wrapped up her speech.
The
following “Must Watch” case that occurs in Pennsbury School District where a
former school board member calls out the current school board members for
trying to censor parents over their complaints on the equity project. He talks
about an incident where he received backlash during a board meeting from a
parent when he was still a board member and he later found out that the segment
of that video had been cut to censor the parent. He recalls calling out the
solicitor and superintendent at the time for doing so because regardless of
whether he was being attacked, parents shouldn’t be censored. He
believes that parents and the general public shouldn’t be censored for their
opinions and that it is their constitutional right to speak out should
they wish to do so. He was deeply upset by the current school board’s effort to
censor the parents and their complaints about the equity project. He goes on to
expose evidence of public emails from the director of equity lobbying and
advocating for the censorship of parents with opposing views.
The biggest
lesson to be learned from this is that every American citizen has the
constitutional right to speak up in opposition to board members should they
want to do so. This is supported by the Supreme Court ruling of 1964 that
states that the country is founded on the principle that public
issues should be debated regardless of whether the opposition is the government
or public officials. Hence you are allowed be in opposition with board members
or public officials on school issues and you have the full right to oppose them
without censorship. After all, this is a fight for your children’s education which
is the future of America.
